Creative play + getting that weaving mojo back

August 13, 2021 By leeleibrandt

A mixed media collage of desert grasses and sands and in pink earthy tones.

July was all about creative play. I wasn’t feeling it with my weaving, so I took some time away from the loom to recharge and explore my creativity in a different way. I focussed on working my way through an online mixed media course. Honestly, it was a joy to just play with no expectation of the outcome. And I have learned new techniques and ways to create pieces of work

Oh hi 2020

October 28, 2020 By leeleibrandt

This later half of the year has seen me working on a different project to my norm. Almost all of my tapestries to date have drawn from my inspiration of, or experiences in, the natural landscape. But I recently finished weaving the first in a series I’ve come to call my ‘covid-collages’. 2020 has been quite the year! Our girl was ready for all the excitement and adventures that a

MARCH 2020 – MONTHLY REFLECTION EXERCISE

April 8, 2020 By leeleibrandt

Well March felt like a total blur of chaos and confusion! It was difficult to focus on anything other than the continual and horrifying news updates on the spread of COVID-19. But despite this, I still managed to keep my hands busy with A LOT of weaving. Weaving in isolation Husband and I flew to Colorado at the beginning of the month. We were supposed to enjoy a three-week ski

February 2020 – Monthly Reflection Exercise

March 4, 2020 By leeleibrandt

At the end of every month in my planner, there are these prompts to help me review the weeks that were. It really helped me highlight the achievements and lessons learned for the month. I put the call out on Instagram and everyone seemed to want to read more, so here’s a bit of what came out of my February monthly reflection exercise. Oh, and it’s probably not surprising, but

Four framed tapestries side by side on a shelf. Each tapestry is a close up view of tree bark.

Project Fail – 3 Positives To Focus On

February 11, 2020 By leeleibrandt

A photo of my first attempt to weave a project that failed. This picture shows weaving on a lap loom.

So you had an idea and wanted to make something? That’s cool. But what happens when that project doesn’t go to plan and you’re left with “Project Fail”? As an artist I have heaps of ideas I want to weave, but sometimes I fail to execute them. At first, it basically feels like I’m left with a piece of crap, and it’s certainly not something I want to put on

Progress on ‘Mount Buffalo B’ Tapestry

February 1, 2020 By leeleibrandt

Mount Buffalo B tapestry

A new addition to the Specere collection I’ve been weaving a new tapestry for my Specere collection, so I thought a little progress update was in order. The working title on this one is ‘Mount Buffalo B’… because, well there was also a ‘Mount Buffalo A’. Quick backstory: You might have seen from my portfolio that over the last couple of years I have been weaving small tapestries, under the

Let’s talk about creativity

January 25, 2020 By leeleibrandt

Creativity. It’s something so many of us think we simply do not have. That’s not true by the way – we all have it in us! It’s just the discovery of our creative passion, or reframing how we think creativity should be expressed, that might be holding us back. In speaking with a few people about this lately, I’m beginning to think the whole reframing thing might actually go a

When I asked Lee to commission a piece for me detailing my favourite view of my island home in New Zealand, I was not disappointed. From the very beginning, Lee was responsive and provided excellent customer service. She took such care in selecting the colour palette, I really felt that she was honouring my childhood memories and treating them with love, care and respect – it meant a lot to me. She kept me informed of her progress every step of the way and gave me choices about how the final piece would look and feel. When it came to framing the piece, little extra touches such as using wood from Tasmania because she knew I used to live there, was really touching. All of these personal gestures added up to the most valuable sentimental piece that I absolutely adore. The piece itself is professionally executed with such precision, featuring a melody of colours and textures that stand out and complement each other all at the same time. Pricing is fair, reflecting the time and effort that goes in to the final piece. I would highly recommend Lee if you have a treasured memory you want depicted in to something tangible, or just want a high quality, unique, eclectic, and naturalistic memento.

I decided to treat myself and buy some art for my wall and came across some photos of amazing woven art by Lee Leibrandt. After stalking her online for awhile (nothing but love and admiration ?) and signing up for her newsletter, I knew for certain that a piece from her was what I wanted for my wall. It sounds like a huge commitment on my part but in reality the price is absolutely reasonable for a lovely handmade piece made just for me. Lee was so sweet to work with and included me, as much as I wanted to be included, in the decisions. My main requirement was that the fibers be all vegan, and she did it! I have to shout out to her father who does the amazing woodwork and frame. It all came together beautifully, so beautifully that based on the progress pictures I also asked Lee for a handwoven basket to hang on my wall. Thank you Lee, for these amazing pieces of art, for sharing your talent, for being inspired by my IG page and likes. Nothing but LOVE!

"Working with Lee was an absolute pleasure and I can’t recommend her highly enough. The piece I commissioned held a lot of emotional significance for me. Lee managed the process with professionalism, empathy and care, which filled me with confidence in her and her work. I loved receiving updates along the way and felt the excitement and momentum building right through until I received my tapestry. I am so blown away with the end result; a divine artwork, which I will treasure forever. Thank you, Lee."
