Mid-2022 I bought myself a big loom. I’d decided it was time to challenge myself with going bigger, weaving on a new scale. And you might have seen on “the socials” that I recently finished weaving my first larger tapestry – Clancy’s Track.
I used a tiny 4cm ‘accidental’ painting inspired by walks over at Mount Majura as the design inspiration for this piece. The lower part of Clancy’s Track is lined with all these small, twisty gum trees and I love the shapes they make. (I dropped black ink onto the paper and tilted it this way and that, to make the trunk lines.) Anyway, I scaled the painting up to 72cm. You can see the difference between the original painting and the tapestry in the photos below.
Being my first piece at this size, I kept tabs on the number of hours I’ve put into the entire process. It took me 95 hours to create – from the cartoon to the finishing work!
I’m so happy with how it looks and really enjoyed weaving at this scale! I’ve already started working on my next big piece. But I also plan on weaving a couple of smaller tapestries again this first quarter of the year. I am working towards a substantial body of work that I can exhibit, so watch this space. Goals for 2023-2024!
